Public transportation systems in Germany


sAirline routes, roads and rail networks all give quick and direct access to Germany.

Here you’ll find a list of the most common ways to get to and around Germany.

By plane:
Most of the airports in the cities in Germany have their own airports and if not one is located very near by. If you come from far away the most comfortable and easiet way is to travel to Germany is by plane. One thing you need to concider are the so called "discount airliners", who offer really cheap fligts. Sometimes these airliners fly in to the smaller airports but you can save alot by flying with these companies. You need to keep in mind that the common rule for these flights is, the sooner you book, the cheaper the ticket.

By Bus:
The centre of Germany stretches over a distance of several kilometres therfore it is wise to use public transport to get around during your internship or practical work experience in Germany. Apart from the many tourist routes there is also a very reliable network of city buses, which bring you from one side of the city to another. Tickets are available at service points, ticket machines and from bus drivers. All the machines explain things in German and English so even if you don’t speak German it is very easy to buy tickets anywhere.

By subway:
The German subway is called the ‘U-Bahn’, running mostly underground, it is the backbone of the German public transportsystem. The U-Bahn started in 1902 and now has over 170 stations and a total raillength of 144.2 kilometres. During the rush hours trains run every two minutes and during the rest of the day anywere between 7 and twelve minutes. There is also a train called the ‘S-Bahn’, which is similar to the U-Bahn with the exeption that this line runs over ground and not under the ground. Tickets for both of these lines are available at numerous points in the city and practically every station.

By Car:
Germany has numerous ways leading in and from the cities. However you may need to watch out for the traffic as it can be very chaotic, it requires some experience before you can drive safely trough a big country like Germany.

By train:
Of course Germany is very easy accessible by train. The names of the lines that run to and through the country are InterCityExpress-, InterCity-, EuroCity- and InterRegio Trains, for you as an international student who is probably working and living in different cities of Germany the trains make it very easy to travel in a comfortable way to any possible destination.

As an international student such as yourself it can be very useful to rent a car when you decide to go out of town to explore the outer regions of a country. Of course there are numerous options to rent a car in Germany. Usually prices and services vary in many ways and on different levels. The best thing to do is to compare the companies for yourself.
